I had already been there in 2015 during my crossing of Central Asia in a 4L. This time I’m passing through on my way to the Chinese city of Kashgar in Uyghur country. I’ve decided to spend part of my summer 2017 cycling the Karakoram Highway, one of the highest roads in the world. It starts in China and ends in Pakistan through the Karakoram mountain range. But getting to the start of the route in Kashgar from Paris is difficult. Most flight plans have me circling the globe three times, whereas Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, is “only” 1,000 km from Kashgar, and planes to get there cost less than €200. My choice was quickly made. For a week, I hitchhiked through the mountains, high-altitude lakes and valleys of Kyrgyzstan before taking a minibus to the south of the country and getting on my bike, heading for China.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default” width=”100%” max_width=”100%”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_code][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default” width=”90%” max_width=”90%”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”https://matthieutordeur.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Kirghizistan-48.jpg” title_text=”Kyrgyzstan-48″ show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”||on||||||” text_font_size=”14px” text_line_height=”1.4em” header_text_align=”center” text_orientation=”center” custom_margin=”5px||||false|false”]

Ala-Too Square in Bishkek, with its imposing statue of Manas, the epic national hero.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”https://matthieutordeur.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Kirghizistan-3.jpg” title_text=”Kyrgyzstan-3″ show_bottom_space=”off” _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.10″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”||on||||||” text_font_size=”14px” text_line_height=”1.4em” header_text_align=”center” text_orientation=”center” custom_margin=”5px||||false|false”]

At the end of the day, families, couples and groups of friends gather in the square.
